Thunderbird for Windows uses an Account Wizard to help you configure your email account(s). The Account Wizard should start the first time you launch the application. When you send mail, you should see the 'Mail Server Password Required' window. Enter your passphrase, and then click OK. If you want Thunderbird to remember your passphrase, select Use PasswordManager to remember this password before clicking OK.
If you have folders in your Exchange account that don't appear in Thunderbird:

Thunderbird can be connected to Exchange. Can Thunderbird be used as an MS Outlook alternative? Which email client can use Exchange protocol for email? Is there Exchange support in free email clients? I would love to say yes to all three questions, but the truth is a little bit complicated.
First, why would you use another client and not Outlook? One reason is price, not every department really needs to use MS Office. MS Office is expensive. MS Outlook only? Well, MS Outlook can also be expensive for some companies. If you are using Linux you know that Microsoft Office or Microsoft Outlook for Linux does not yet exist.
What ever the reason, if you need exchange support on third party email client on Windows machine, there are only 2 options. First option is DavMail which is a proxy between MS Exchange and your client of choice. You set up your email client with imap or pop3 and smtp and Davmail relays that information to Exchange server via Exchange protocol. The other option is Mozilla Thunderbird with a commercial add on.
That Add on is called ExQuilla. For $10 a year, Mozilla Thunderbird gains Exchange support for email and contacts. Seting up account is quite easy and the only missing feature is automatic account set up. Plugin could query AD to get information about logged in user and populate account information automatically. I am sure one day it will get this feature, while not essential could save couple of seconds to technician / user configuring email account.
- Davmail can be used to connect any email client to MS Exchange for free
How to connect Thunderbird to MS Exchange with ExQuilla add on
First you have to install plugin. You can do that by searching for plugin via Mozilla Thunderbird plugins dialogue or pointing location to plugin saved on your hard drive. Restart Thunderbird. Now you can set up your exchange account.
Once you enter name and your email, you have to enter your MS Exchange information.
The whole process takes about 3 – 5 minutes, which is not bad. Thunderbird is then transformed to MS Exchange compatible email client. It works great and you gain access to GAL with autocomplete. The only 2 missing features are Calendar and Tasks. In the past there was an addon called Exchange EWS Provider Add-on for Lightning. Unfortunately author stopped plugin development. Imagine that you rely on such plugin and you discover that it’s not compatible with latest release. Thankfully ExQuilla author, Mr. Kent picked up where original author left and started a fork. While still in beta, It has support for Office 365 and Exchange 2013. There is a hope that it will become a complete product.
$10 per year is a not a lot for Exchange compatibility. There are 2 types of licences, Domain license where you buy X ammount of licences for one domain. License is assigned automatically when new user is created. Named user license where you have notify all the emails that will be used for X amount of purchased licences to ExQuilla. We have a trial of 20 Thunderbird users with Equilla addon, in 8 months so far, there were no issues. Most users like Thunderbird once they get used to it.
How Mozilla failed 20.000.000 users
Mozilla foundation is funded by donations of it’s users. Or at least most users think so. Mozilla corporation, owned by Mozilla foundation receives about 80% of money from big corporations like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft. In 2005 it earned a whooping 55.000.000 (million) dollars. From 2012 – 2014 Mozilla foundation received 900 million – 300 million annually from Google in order that Google is default search engine.
In July 6, 2012, Mozilla announced that they will stop financially supporting Thunderbird and transfer development to become community driven project. According to mr. Kent James, founder of ExQuilla, Mozilla Thunderbird is used by approx. 20.000.000 users. How come that organisation which has a product with 20 million users doesn’t care? Perhaps the reason is lack of innovation and ideas. With web email services like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail, is there a place left for normal Email client? What about companies? Would they pay for email client? The answer to both questions is a definitive yes. Email clients like Airmail, MailMate, Mailpilot and Postbox (Thunderbird fork) are example that you can earn money with Email client and that yes, you can innovate.
We used ExQuilla in our company but have since moved to the email client which can replace MS Outlook completely but for much less money. It’s called eMClient. It has a great look, doesn’t have a mailbox database corruption issue, doesn’t have a slow archiving problem. In fact, it’s the perfect Outlook replacement.
Unfortunately for Thunderbird, future is unclear. I hope that ExQuilla gains enough sales to fork Thunderbird and builds a great Outlook alternative.

Many small businesses looking for a fast, lightweight and free email client opt to use Mozilla Thunderbird, from the developers of the Firefox browser. Thunderbird works with most popular mail server applications, including Microsoft Exchange. Before you can start checking your email, though, you must configure Thunderbird to work with Exchange. This procedure is fairly simple and is managed through Thunderbird's menus. You will need a few items of information from your mail administrator before you start: your username, password, domain, mail server name and address, port and SSL settings.
1.Launch Thunderbird, either from a desktop shortcut or the applications menu.
2.Click 'Tools.' Select 'Account Settings' from the submenu.
3.Enter your name in the Name field; this can be your personal name or a nickname as you want it to appear in your business emails.
4.Type your full email address in the Email field and enter your password below. The password characters will be masked as you type.
5.Click 'Continue.' Thunderbird will apply your settings to the configuration file. Click the 'Manual Config' button when it appears.
6.Configure the incoming mail options. Click the 'Mail type' drop-down and select 'IMAP' from the choices. In the Authentication drop-down, choose 'Normal Password.' Other items of information you will need here are your server hostname, port and SSL/TLS options. These will vary, depending on your mail network setup. If you are unsure about what to enter, ask your mail administrator.
7.Configure the outgoing mail options. On the SSL drop-down menu, select 'STARTTLS' and choose 'Normal Password' from the Authentication menu. Obtain the values to enter in the Server Hostname, Domain and Username fields from your mail administrator if you don’t know them.
9.Click the 'Outgoing Server' option on the options menu. Confirm that the mail server you entered in the earlier steps is set to the default server by clicking the 'Default Server' button next to the server name.
10.Click 'OK' to exit the Advanced menu, and click 'OK' again to exit the Tools menu.

Your question is very similar to this AU answer.
In summary - if your MS Exchange server supports IMAP or POP3 then thunderbird can be used as your Email client.
However, if you want to directly support MS Outlook .pst files and other MS Exchange capabilities, then Evolution is a better client to use.

You should look into this piece of software which acts as a gateway between Exchange and mail clients. http://davmail.sourceforge.net/

You need to use the ExQuilla addon. This is very easy to use, and allows you to set up your exchange account, even using auto-discovery if it is configured correctly. However, After a 60 day trial, it's not free to use.
You don't need to have IMAP enabled on the server for this.
- Go to addons, install a plugin called exquilla
(If you want calender also install 'lightening') - Go to http://www.1st-setup.nl/wordpress/?page_id=551 and download (you may have to right click and 'download as')
- Back in thunderbird, click 'Tools → addons'There is like an options button beside the search box on the top left, click this and select 'Install add-on from file'
- Select the file you just downloaded.
- Restart thunderbird.
To configure
- Click 'Tools → ExQilla for microsoft exchange → Add microsoft exchange account
- Leave everything as default, auto discovery worked a charm.
Calender →
- Right click on left menu and pick 'New Calender'
- Choose 'on the Network'
- Choose Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010/2013
- Auto discovery didn't work here for me, so fill out your email, username and fill the domain with 'your domain'
- I think there is then a discover button which you can click, and it populates the folder field.
- I left everything else and clicked next.
So far everything seems good.
I believe there is also an addon to read the exchange *.dat files called 'lookOut' But I have seen benefits from this yet'
Set up your signature
(If you need to copy thunderbird filters from an old account just quit thunderbird, and copy
0xF2msgFilterRules.dat
from your old profiles folder in ~/.thunderbird/blah/ImapMail/blah/
to ~/.thunderbird/blah/ExQuilla/email.vmware.com
) All your filters copy.. beat that zimbra migration!2,3522 gold badges21 silver badges47 bronze badges

From my experience, its a 'yes' to Thunderbird reading and managing mail from Exchange, and a 'maybe' to sending email. I just started using Thunderbird with Exchange via IMAP.
Under
Tools > Account Settings..
I added an account. After entering my email address and clicking Create Account
, it found my organisation's details, but they were incorrect.I needed to manually configure it to
IMAP
as the type; the server name was the same as the Exchange server (use your organisation's Outlook setup to find it); the SSL configuration was SSL/TLS
; and I needed to change Authorization to Normal
(Thunderbird incorrectly detected it as Kerberos/GSSApi).I had no luck sending email to users outside my organisation using the Exchange server, so I switched to another SMTP server that I could access.
I didn't have any Exchange folders other than Inbox in my setup, but I've read that they may not automatically appear in Thunderbird. To show them, in Thunderbird right click the Inbox folder (in the list of folders) and click
Subscribe..
to check what folders are shown from Exchange.MeadMead
